
Professor John Hughes

John
Hughes spent virtually all his working life at University
of Technology, Sydney and in
over 36 years he held almost
every senior post from Acting VC to Dean or Acting Dean of almost every
faculty. He was Dean of the former Faculty of Mathematical and
Computing
Sciences for some 9 years and before that Associate and Acting Dean for
many
years. His final position was as Director of the UTS Institute
for
Information and Communication Technologies. He was much loved as a
teacher
especially in introductory programming and his area of research,
Computer
Graphics. He also held various positions in the University of Otago
and Auckland University of Technology. Zealand
Computing Departments.
John was
involved with the
management of the Australian Computer Society for well over twenty
years,
making an invaluable contribution, particularly in the areas of ACS
publications and membership standards and as Accreditation, Assessments
and
Appeals Board Director He was recognised formally for his involvement
by being
made an Honorary Life Member of the Society in 1990. He frequently
represented Australia
on
International Computing Education bodies and contributed to various
IFIP
working groups. He was awarded the ACM SIGCSE Computer Educator of the
Year
(posthumously) in 2007.
John
was a tireless
contributor to the ICT profession, and during his distinguished career
he
provided invaluable support to the industry, particularly in the
education of
ICT professionals. His friendship, leadership, wisdom and down to earth
approach are greatly missed by many.
